Abortion, Life and Women’s Health

As the new session of Congress begins, please consider the important issues of life, the protection of children and the health and safety of women. As someone who believes in individual rights, I was a supporter of choice for women when it came to abortion. After many years of careful consideration I now realize that the killing of unborn children does significant and lasting harm to women and can not be referred to as women’s health.

Abortion does not empower women. There are too many cases of men coercing women into having an abortion. Abortion is not women’s health. The physical and emotional harm to women has been documented over and over again.

As a former Democrat I am saddened that the party, which used to stand for abortion as rare and supported its reduction, now promotes, encourages and even celebrates abortion. Millions of American children have never gotten the chance to live out their lives and enjoy what we have. We have lost their contributions to our lives forever.

So imagine if these famous people had been aborted and had never lived full and productive lives:

Martin Luther King – Who would have raised the conscience of America to the need for civil rights and equality?

Hubert Humphrey – Who would have brought the Democratic Party out of the darkness of segregation in 1948 and who would have guided the bi-partisan support needed to pass the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960s?

Winston Churchill – Who would have stood up to Hitler and the Nazis and saved Europe and the entire world from destruction?

Jonas Salk – Who would have found the cure for polio and eradicated it for millions of future children,

And today, suppose these babies get a chance to live instead of being aborted. 

For example, Baby A being aborted right now who could have discovered a future renewable energy source?

Or Baby B, who would have negotiated peace between Israel and the Palestinians,

Or Baby C, who could have become the first women President of the United States,

Or Baby D, who would have brought joy and love to a whole next generation of family members as a parent, brother, sister and grandparent.

This is a moral issue as well as a public policy issue. Will we as a nation participate in wiping out future generations that can give and share so much? Or will we instead step back from the brink and find ways to value every life? It is up to you and me. So please support the following actions:

*Congress should only appropriate funds to organizations that promote health of our citizens and not fund organizations that perform abortions.

*Congress should promote ultrasounds for pregnant women to assist in the health of the mother and baby and give mothers a voluntary opportunity to see their babies as they develop.

*Discrimination against adoption and foster organizations who have deeply-held religious beliefs must end. These organizations are ready, willing and able to help women and families in crisis and protect children. We need more, not less options for women such as adoption as opposed to more abortions.

*Organizations that provide abortion and who ignore and do not report sexual, emotional and financial abuse of women should be investigated and sanctioned.
