What is Abortion and Why Allowances Don't Help

What is Abortion and Why Allowances Don't Help

Abortion is the intentional torturing of a baby to death in the womb. The procedure hurts women and devastates men. Chemical abortion, now 63% of all abortion, is frightening, painful, and sends more women to ERs than other methods. Abortion increases the danger to women who suffer from emotional and psychiatric problems. It has been used as a method of genocide against Jews and Jewish practice of abortion continues to eliminate Jews.

Let's be clear. Nowhere in Torah is it stated that killing an unborn child is allowed. The first reference in Torah regarding the life of the unborn child is in Genesis 9:6, (in a direct translation from the original text)

“He who spills the blood of man within man shall have his blood spilt, for in the image of God made He man. And you, be fruitful, and multiply; swarm in the earth, and multiply therein.”

The Talmud interprets "the blood of man within man" as to include an unborn child in the womb of the mother. Things that are prohibited under the Noahide laws are also prohibited to Jews. The severity of abortion in Torah is underscored by consequences for the abortionist ranging from death at the hands of Heaven to the death penalty in a court of law.

What is abortion? What are we really saying when we talk about it? It is the intentional destruction of an unborn baby. It is not treatment for an ectopic pregnancy. It is not a miscarriage, medically known as a spontaneous abortion. It is not the humane pre-term separation of a baby from the mother before the baby is viable.

Rabbinical exceptions allowed for imminent danger to the mother's life was never mentioned in Torah. It may have seemed pragmatic at the time for breech birth; however, the risk of infection, perforation of the uterus, and blood loss resulting from dismembering a full term infant in the womb were real contraindications for this solution. Today, it is no longer necessary to torture a baby to death in the womb to save a mother's life. Never.

The Pro-Life Reply to: "Is Abortion Ever Medically Necessary?"

Rabbinical exceptions later declared for psychiatric problems may have seemed a sensible solution; however, this reason to torture a healthy baby to death in the womb was never mentioned in Torah, either. It is well documented today that psychiatric problems increase after abortion. Women who suffer from psychiatric problems can be helped by providing them proper support rather than causing them more problems by making them complicit in torturing their baby to death. Adoption is a life saving solution for women who are mentally unstable to the degree that they cannot care for their child.

Torah commands us to protect the baby in the womb for good reasons.

Abortion is very dangerous for women. Permitting it for difficult situations causes other difficult situations. Avoiding it avoids other difficult situations.

Chemical abortion, now used for 63% of abortions, puts a woman's life and health in grave danger as she bleeds out at home alone. The complications send many women to the ER.

Exceptions for rape and incest appear nowhere in Torah, either. Instead, we are given clear guidelines regarding the treatment of women who conceive after these crimes are committed, guidelines that do not include killing the baby. While it may be very challenging for a woman and her family to choose life saving options it is much healthier to continue the pregnancy. Fathers shall not be put to death because of sons, nor shall sons be put to death because of fathers; each man shall be put to death for his own transgression. Beyond moral, ethical, and medical reasons to update our thinking on abortion allowances, continuing Jewish practice of this barbaric and unnecessary practice perpetuates Jewish genocide. Jewish posterity diminishes every time a Jewish baby encounters an abortion procedure resulting in its painful demise, whether via chemicals, dismemberment, or induced into this world alive and killed immediately or allowed to live until organ removal for lucrative profits.

Allowances and exceptions to the prohibition to abortion in Torah may help find common ground with more radical abortion advocates. This is helpful in order to facilitate discussions that inform and may trigger soul searching and healing. The downside of allowances and exceptions need to accompany mention of them so that our listeners learn that they are dangerous in any circumstance and do not serve the needs of Jewish women, men, and families.
